Re-release of Shadows and Light!

Hi Darlins!

Just throwing out there that I've got a new (re)-release out as of today. Shadows and Light, my high fantasy take on vampires, is back out into the world :) Some of you might remember this one--it published in 2015, I think, and I got it back last year. I edited it again, it's got a new cover, it's SO FUN and also, damn, smoking hot and full of BDSM aesthetics, yowza. I was going through an explicit phase when I wrote this one.

Anyway, you can find it here. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D3BK9VKM

And here's the blurb!

A chance for revenge turns into a fight for survival as Rafael, a former assassin, and his immortal master Xian must escape a city on the brink of chaos. But can Rafael trust the one person he thought he could count on, or will their past keep them apart?

Rafael wanted nothing more than to serve his immortal master, Xian, a High One of Clare, who taught him from an early age how to be an assassin. But after failing his final test, Rafael was turned out into the Lower City, abandoned by the one person he thought he could count on.

Years of hatred and thoughts of revenge have fueled Rafael’s quest for vengeance, but when the time comes to strike at Xian, he hesitates and is taken prisoner. Rafael expects to die, but instead Xian reveals the dark truth driving the ruthlessness of the High Ones—the source of their immortality is spent. Soon the city will devolve into chaos as High Ones battle one another and the rebellious denizens of the Lower City for power and resources. Xian wants to spare Rafael that pain, just as he spared him the pain of becoming a High One a decade earlier.

Their only chance for survival is to escape Clare before civil war breaks out. Even if they make it out of the city, though, there’s no guarantee that Xian will live through the agonizing process of becoming human again. They can only rely on each other…if Rafael can bring himself to once again trust the only man he’s ever loved.

New Release: Shadows and Light

Soooo...I've got a new release out this week!

Shadows and Light is here at last! It's my epic fantasy/BDSM/mm romance/magical thriller (all of that happens, I swear) and so far, people seem to like it. I don't normally share reviews but I've got some really good ones, so lemme give you some highlights:

From Joyfully JayHonestly, I am not sure where to begin this review—so, so much happened in Cari Z.’s novel, Shadows & Light. It was, simply put, absolutely stunning. Gorgeous world building, fresh and unusual paranormal characters, a delicious enemies to lovers trope that played out in such a searing and passionate way and, finally, a plot full of shocking twists and turns that kept me glued to my e-reader till the final page —all these combined to make this book one I couldn’t put down.

And from Prism Book AllianceFor a short book it’s packed with action and romance, from the first pages where Rafael works for the dastardly Daeva, a proper bad guy, to the end. And because of this I was worried that the characters would lack depth, but that wasn’t the case, I was emotionally invested all the way through.

As a general rule I don’t read a lot of books that involve pain as pleasure, unless I really trust the author, as it’s not my thing – but here Cari Z captured the balance so well.
Yay for being off to a lovely start :) If you're interested in reading for yourself, you can find this story here:

Stuff, things, holy sh*t!

Sooo...good thing that Redstone finished up last week, because my honey and I have just discovered the joys of "the interminable home improvement project." You know the type. You think you're going to do this one thing, and yeah, it's kind of big but you can handle it, just a few weeks and some hard work and the result will be you getting to lounge like a boss in a clawfoot tub (those, by the way, are really fucking heavy. Like...really heavy. *groan*).

Only then you notice a leak trickling down from the upstairs bathroom into the lower one, and--wait, no, two of them, and--oh. Wow, look at all the rot up there! Let's hope the floor doesn't collapse beneath us... Heeeey, no, we can fix all that. We just can't shower at home or use the upstairs toilet while we're doing it. SO, basically, the point is...time=zero, because this is the week of fixing shit. I'm mostly the gofer, which is fine with me.

Hmm, let's see, better stuff...um, I should have a contest going next week for a very special little book! That'll be fun. I'm planning the story that's starting next month, yay. I bought tickets to Vegas for RT, and also bought tickets to go see my brother and his growing family (new baby) in March--yeah, working the family faction there. We're almost ready to nail down our trip to Cambodia to visit my MIL in September, which will be fucking amazing and I'm so excited to go.

And ooh ooh! Shadows & Light is available for preorder from Pride Publishing! If you order from their website, you get to read it a month in advance. So...yeah. Fun!

Quick FYI for a story on Lit

Hi guys,

If you've read any of my stories on Literotica, such as, say, The Captain, and want to read it again, I suggest you do it soon. I just contracted that one for publication and will be removing it asap. All the others are still up, though, and will stay that way for now!

Yay publication, boo it going away. But it'll be back soon in another form, swear. And if you're missing the other one I pulled from Lit, Shadows and Light, it's coming soon from Pride Publishing! It's got it's own page and everything :) https://www.pride-publishing.com/book/shadows-and-light

I think that's it for now. Back to chipping up old floor. Woooooooooyeah. Lovin' it. But it'll all be worth it in the end!

FYI: Shadows & Light

Hi there!

So, I got a comment on the blog asking about what's going on with Shadows & Light. Given that it's scheduled to come out next month, there's surprisingly little info out about it yet. However! That situation has been remedied, thanks to a chat with my awesome editor at Pride Publishing. So, the skinny on Shadows & Light is this:

Pre-Order Date: 2nd February 2016 (only for Pride/TEB website)
Early Release Date: 16th February 2016 (again, only if purchased from Pride/TEB)
General Release Date: 15th March 2016 (everywhere else)

And there you have it! It hasn't been added to Goodreads yet, but hopefully soon. And if you just can't wait that long to get a story from me, Dangerous Territory comes out Wednesday from LT3 Press. Woot! More details on that later.

Cover Reveal for Shadows & Light

Look what I got this morning! LOOK AT IT! Succumb to it's beauty and fall under it's spell.

I should probably wait to show this off until I have a buy link, but you know what? Screw that, I want to share. Shadows & Light comes out with Pride Publishing in February 2016, and I'll tell you all about how awesome it is closer to the date, but for now...look! Isn't it lovely?

Status Update

Because I don't update my website often enough... (this weekend, swear to god, it'll happen)

What the heck am I doing lately? When are my new releases coming out? What are they, even, and why am I so terrible at promo?

We'll just disregard that last question and move right along.

What I'm working on currently: Redstone, and am having to resist the temptation to jump ahead to the next story in the Bonded universe, which will go back to Cody and Ten and everyone, with a heavy side focus on Jonah. Make of that what you will.

Also, my NaNo project this year is the beginning of my next Samhain project, which is a complicated contemporary that I'm grappling with like the Nemean Lion. Fear not, I will skin this bitch and hang it's wordy carcass on my wall before deadline.

Upcoming releases: I've got a coauthored short story with Caitlin Ricci called Worth the Wait in this year's Dreamspinner Advent Calendar, available in December: Advent Calendar

The whole collection is on sale right now, so if you're interested, it's a good time to jump on it. Our story is sweet and feel-good and involves freezing your ass off in line in front of a bookstore to get what you want, a feeling I know I'm not alone in.

On January 13th my novella Dangerous Territory will be re-released through Less Than Three Press: Dangerous Territory

It's an m/m, alt history, shapeshifting adventure story that was originally published in Storm Moon Press' Forgotten Menagerie anthology, but has since been re-edited and given a beautiful new cover. I want to be up front: this is a re-release, folks, so if you read it in the original antho, don't expect anything drastically new here.

In February I've got Shadows and Light coming out with Pride Publishing, formerly Totally Bound. This is one that I first published on Literotica years ago, and has been edited to within an inch of its life, is getting beautiful cover art I can't show off yet, and released as a 70k novel. I'm pretty sure if you've read my stuff for years (which some of you have--crazy, I love you) you've read this one, but I'm pleased to be releasing it as a real, grown-up book. I mean, magical pseudo-vampires and BDSM. What's not to love?

In April Tempest comes out with Samhain, which is ridiculously exciting because they're an amazing company and this, honestly, is a pretty epic book. My longest publication to date, a dark fantasy that nevertheless pulls it out at the end, I'm so excited for this one. Cover soon! I also get to go to the Romantic Times conference in Vegas in April, so this is looking to be a good month.

Last thing I know for sure: Panopolis #3 will come out with Riptide in May. No cover or link yet (I'm still doing edits, pray for my soul) but I'm really, really happy with how this one came out. I think it'll surprise people. More info for you when I have it.

That's all I know, on the writing front. Personally, my honey and I are going to travel to Cambodia at some point next year to visit my darling MIL, who is working with the Peace Corps there. Japan this year, Cambodia next year: I know a lot of fucking awesome, travelsome people. I'm lucky to be able to go and visit them on their adventures.

So! My calendar for the forseeable future. ;)

Two Amazing New Contracts!

Hi guys!

Yay, I finally get to spill the beans! I just finalized contracts for two novels, both to come out next year, both with either a new publisher or someone I haven't published with in a long time. This isn't because I'm not incredibly happy with my current publishers (Riptide, I love you) but timing wise it just worked out better this way.

The first novel is a completely new one that I talked about, like, two years ago. It's my massive epic fantasy, genderbending m/m romance version of The Little Mermaid, tentatively titled Tempest (here, have a tongue twister), to be published by...wait for it...Samhain!

Sploosh of happiness!

This is big for me, because I've tried to publish with Samhain twice before and been very nicely turned down. I don't have an agent, I'm not a big name, I wasn't at all sure they would go for this but I thought I'd try again with this novel. I sent it to them and settled in to wait, and then they got back to me in a week! It should be coming out next April, and I'm just...incredibly pleased by this. I think this story is really special, probably my best so far.

The second novel is technically a reprint, but not really, because the first time around it was free. Yeah...if you've read my stuff on Literotica, then you know I've got a ton of stories on there. You also might have noticed that one of them has been taken down. Not Bonded or Pandora! It's Shadows and Light, my take on the vampire mythos, and it's going to Totally Bound's new Pride imprint. It should be out in March of next year.

Luke Evans as Rafael, because omg why not? WHY NOT!?

So, yeah! Two novels next year, I'm so thrilled. Plus I've got Where There's Fire coming out next month, and In Memoriam, and Camellia 2 is out on Wednesday. Lots of stuff.

Also, tomorrow is my birthday, so look for something special as your serial update ;)

Shadows and Light Ch. 3

It's up!  After too long waiting because I posted improperly (FFS, Cari...) the third chapter of Shadows and Light is up on Literotica.  Here's the link direct to the story: Shadows and Light Ch.3.  Please rate it  (please!), comment, send me a message...if you go to the main story page, the first story listed is Shadows Of Light by someone else, but the name similarity threw me at first.

And I just read your last comment, Tiffany, timing is really working today:)

Shadows and Light Prologue

So the third chapter is well underway, but it won't be going up on Literotica for a bit.  I'm fighting hordes of purple prose at every turn, so I can't honestly vouch for the quality of this snippet as I haven't had it beta'd yet.  However, I promised, and additionally it's Tiffany's birthday and she is a fantastic person, so she should get a present.  So here.  For Tiffany.

Clare, the Bright City, was burning.

What had begun as an isolated explosion in the heart of the Upper Half had quickly spread thanks to inattention, confusion and the fact that the explosion occurred at noon. No high ones could be out and about then, not without risking their lives in the sun, and many of their human servants had scattered with the blast, wilting under the violent transition from placid to fearful. What they feared varied from one individual to the next, but every resident of the Upper City was attuned to the nameless anxiety lurking there. The cold, haughty serenity that had reigned for half a millennium was crumbling, buckling under the corpses of dead ideas suddenly resurrected in all their terrifying mortality. Change was coming, and the servants feared it almost as much as their masters.

No one in the city had expected the change to happen quite so fast, however.

Two men stood on the far shore of the lake in which the island city sat, watching the towering flames. They couldn’t hear the screams, not from here, but they could well imagine them. They’d been hearing them only an hour earlier, after all. Human screams, the twisting roar of tumbling masonry, the groaning opening of cavernous sinkholes. The very fabric of Clare was disintegrating. Not all of it would go, not yet, but the end had well and truly begun.

“It’s not right,” Rafael said finally, breaking a silence that had endured the length of their trip to the mainland. His eyes still stung from smoke and the fumes from the barge they had ridden on.

“It’s not right or wrong,” Xian said, his voice flat and uninflected. “It just is.”

“So many people are dying—”

“And so many are living. And so many are already dead. This is a disaster, pet, uncontrollable off the mark. Don’t even think about trying to take it into yourself.”

Rafael turned and stared at his master. His lover. They had been lovers for less than a day, and already the sense of obligation that Xian felt towards him had precipitated the inferno on that distant shore. “If you had given me to Myrtea, this wouldn’t have happened.”

“Clare has always been a doomed city,” Xian replied calmly. “It was doomed from the moment we first discovered the source of eternal, damning youth. The end has been looming for longer than any of us had the wit to realize. My refusal to give you to Myrtea merely forced Fate’s hand.” He looked directly at Rafael, white eyes glowing orange in the light of the flames. “I do not regret keeping you. Not for an instant. Neither should you.” He held out his hand, the heavy black cloth that protected him ripped and revealing moon-pale skin in several places. Xian reached out to Rafael and Rafael came to him instantly, settling into arms that had murdered dozens today, hands that had set a city on fire to keep him safe. Xian smelled of smoke and ash and stale blood, but Rafael couldn’t help but take comfort in his embrace. He was Xian’s. His apprentice, his failure, his burden, his lover. His.

Xian pressed a kiss to Rafael’s brow, then his cheek, then his upturned, seeking lips. The parts of him that wanted to rage and scream and fly into a million pieces melted away with his master’s kiss, even though Xian tasted like Erran’s blood. God’s blood, the gift and the curse, the withering spring of immortality that might yet take Xian from him. It was the taste of life, and death.

“I’ll get the horses,” Xian murmured against his mouth, then gently disengaged from their embrace and turned, slipping away into the darkness of unsettled forest. Rafael stared again at Clare, hating to see it but unable to look away. The solace he felt knowing his own loved ones had escaped the bloody battle and conflagration was a guilty source of relief. He stared, wishing he was numb and cursing inside.

It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.
